Project Management has never been more relevant..

During the remaining part of 2020 we will see enterprises, governments and individuals that work for them strive to pivot and recover. We're all going to have to work smart and hard to make good with what we have for the remaining part of this year and the changed conditions we'll need to work under. I do not believe standing still and hoping for the best is the way to go.

We will have to adapt, try new ways and find our new paths. It won't be easy and it will entail change. Change for what businesses sell, how people work, how products are made and delivered, how goods and services are purchased...the list goes on. This makes project management more critical than ever. If we are changing, we need to manage that change proactively. Each one of us is going to need to manage a project. Some small and personal, others huge and public.

The skill set and capability has never been more relevant for individuals, enterprises and, dare I say it, whole economies.

The Soft Stuff (ain't so soft in a crisis)

In my opinion, they are critically important to a project leaders capability, especially when dealing the project 'crisis'! Yet they aren't really taught by any of the methodologies. Most PMs (certainly the ones I had the privilege to witness and learn from) learnt from the 'school of hard knocks'. Here's a non exhaustive list of things that I think one needs to be able to do Being able to deliver bad news Having the difficult conversations Being solution focused and making others solution focused Assessing options Coping with confrontational situations: be ready for a fire fight Making sure people collaborate for solutions Being trusted to deal with the issues Credibility with the stakeholders  Being seen to control and lead a situation Being calm in the storm Dealing with the stress Understand where your interests lie What do you think? Are you prepared for Success?

So....   ....you've kicked off your project,       diligently documented it's initiation,           on-boarded key stakeholders,                assessed key risks and                    agreed a schedule... But have you prepared for success? "What?”, you say, “Success? Surely if we're successful we just ride off into the sunset high fiving each other while basking in the admiration of our colleagues and clients!"  (actual quote).
