Best Boss I've ever had...

I'm very grateful that I've had the privilege of working for many awesome people over the years from whom I attempted to glean wisdom.

One gentleman, in particular, stands out. 

He was an 'enabler'. 

  • He clearly defined my role and responsibilities.
  • He provided the tools and processes that I needed to execute my role.
  • He clearly set out expectations of what standards he expected.
  • He regularly touched base with me to make sure things were on track.

As a consequence, I performed. 

I just did. Effortlessly.

It was a revelation and it felt amazing. 

He showed me how it should be done.

I've tried to emulate him ever since.

The Soft Stuff (ain't so soft in a crisis)

In my opinion, they are critically important to a project leaders capability, especially when dealing the project 'crisis'! Yet they aren't really taught by any of the methodologies. Most PMs (certainly the ones I had the privilege to witness and learn from) learnt from the 'school of hard knocks'. Here's a non exhaustive list of things that I think one needs to be able to do Being able to deliver bad news Having the difficult conversations Being solution focused and making others solution focused Assessing options Coping with confrontational situations: be ready for a fire fight Making sure people collaborate for solutions Being trusted to deal with the issues Credibility with the stakeholders  Being seen to control and lead a situation Being calm in the storm Dealing with the stress Understand where your interests lie What do you think? Leadership is about Choices...

When one thinks of the word 'leadership', typically headline grabbing personalities on the world stage of business or politics often jump to mind.  However, I don't think that leadership is that grandiose.  We all do it everyday to a certain extent, when we care for our kids, do our jobs or help a stranger. I believe leadership consists of 2 parts. The first part is a choice exercised by the leader. It is the choice to take personal responsibility to change the current situation for the better. You can choose to let things slide. Or take a stand to do what must be done because it is the right thing to do. The second part of leadership is also a choice, but exercised by people choosing to follow the leader. They do so, because the leader exhibits good leadership behaviors such as listening, understanding, developing and communicating vision and ensuring that decisive action is taken.
